Understanding Your Mind and Creating Change
A gentle introduction to Rapid Transformational Therapy, hypnosis, NLP, the SWAN protocol and EFT tapping.
Have you ever thought, “I know what I should do. Why do I still feel this way?”
Perhaps you want to speak with confidence, but your voice becomes quieter when everyone turns towards you. You promise yourself you will stop overthinking, then spend the evening replaying a conversation. Or you reach for food when what you really need is comfort.
These moments can be frustrating, especially when you are already trying hard.
In my work, I help you explore the thoughts, feelings and familiar responses that keep showing up. We begin with what is happening in your life and what you would like to change. Then we choose an approach that feels comfortable for you.
You may have heard some of the names I use: RTT, hypnosis, NLP, the SWAN protocol and EFT. Let me explain what they mean and what experiencing them can feel like.
Why understanding alone sometimes feels insufficient?
You can know that you are capable and still feel nervous. You can understand that a relationship has ended and still find yourself waiting for a message.
Some of our responses happen before we have time to think them through. We develop habits, associations and expectations through experience. In coaching and hypnotherapy, we often refer to this automatic part of our experience as “the subconscious.”
Imagine feeling tense every time you have to speak in a meeting. You might begin to notice the expectation underneath it: “If I make a mistake, people will judge me.” That gives us something specific to explore and a new response to practise.
This is where our work begins, with curiosity about your experience and respect for what you are feeling.
Hypnosis gives you space to focus inward
Hypnosis is a process of focused attention in which you can become more responsive to helpful suggestions. Many people experience it as a comfortable opportunity to slow down and turn their attention inward.
During a session, I guide you with words and imagery connected to your goal. We might imagine you speaking more comfortably, responding calmly to a familiar trigger or approaching a situation with greater self-trust.
You remain a participant throughout. Hypnosis is not sleep, and you can usually hear me, speak and remain aware of what is happening. You can ask a question or stop whenever you need to.
The value of hypnosis is that it lets us work with how an experience feels, as well as what you think about it. You have an opportunity to rehearse a different response with focused attention.
Research gives us an encouraging reason to explore this approach. A 2019 review of hypnosis for anxiety, bringing together 15 studies, found significant benefits for anxiety reduction, particularly when hypnosis was combined with other psychological interventions.
RTT explores the beliefs behind familiar patterns
Rapid Transformational Therapy, or RTT, was developed by Marisa Peer. It brings together hypnosis and techniques for exploring and reframing beliefs, habits and emotional patterns.
Sometimes a belief becomes so familiar that we stop questioning it. “I am not good enough.” “I have to please everyone.” “It is safer to stay quiet.” You may recognise the words immediately, even if you have never said them aloud.
In an RTT session, we explore the experiences and meanings you connect with those beliefs. The aim is to understand how you relate to yourself today and develop perspectives that support the changes you want to make.
For example, we might work with the feeling that you always have to earn approval. What would change if you could express a need without first apologising for having it?
An RTT session commonly includes a personalised recording to listen to afterwards. This gives you a way to continue practising the supportive ideas and responses we have worked on together.
When past experiences arise, we explore the meaning they hold for you, without assuming that every detail recalled under hypnosis is historically accurate.
NLP helps you notice how you speak to yourself
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. In coaching, it involves exploring how language, perspective and habitual responses relate to one another.
Think about what happens when you tell yourself, “I always get this wrong.” It can leave little room to try again. “This is difficult for me, and I can prepare” gives you somewhere to begin.
With NLP exercises, we may explore your inner dialogue, look at a situation from another perspective or mentally rehearse an upcoming interview or conversation. The aim is to find useful ways of thinking and responding that you can practise in everyday life.
You do not have to pretend that everything is positive. We start with what is true for you and look for a perspective that gives you more choice.
NLP work usually takes place while you are fully awake and does not require hypnosis.
The SWAN protocol offers another way to explore
Sometimes it is difficult to put a feeling into words. You might know that something is bothering you, yet struggle to explain it.
The SWAN protocol, developed by Bob Burns, uses ideomotor responses: small hand or finger movements that can happen without a deliberate decision to make them. Practitioners describe the process as a way of communicating with the subconscious.
I guide the process while you remain awake and aware. There is no need for a formal hypnotic induction or an effort to enter a deep trance. You can notice what happens and talk with me about your experience.
It offers a different route into exploration for someone who prefers this approach. We treat the movements as personal responses to explore together, rather than as a test that reveals hidden facts.
EFT tapping brings attention to what you feel
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It combines gentle tapping on specific points on the face and upper body with words that acknowledge a thought, feeling or situation.
We might begin with something very simple: “When I think about tomorrow's presentation, I feel tension in my chest.” I guide you through the tapping, and we pause to notice what you feel. From there, we adjust the words and the focus together.
You do not need to push a feeling away or find the perfect explanation. We begin with the experience you are having now.
One useful aspect of EFT is that you can learn to practise it between sessions, giving you a tool to return to when you want to pause and attend to your feelings.
A published review of EFT for anxiety, covering 14 studies and 658 participants, found significant reductions in anxiety scores. The findings are encouraging, while further research is needed to establish how EFT compares with established treatments.
Choosing an approach together
You do not need to use all five methods. We agree on an approach together and review how you are responding.
You also do not need to choose a method before our first conversation. What matters first is understanding you: what feels difficult, what you have already tried and what you would like to feel or do differently.
Our work might focus on low confidence, negative self-talk, emotional eating, overthinking, stress, fear of public speaking or adjusting to a new chapter in your life.
Progress can look quite ordinary and still matter deeply: saying what you mean in a meeting, responding more kindly to a mistake or having another way to comfort yourself when you feel upset.
You can begin with your own words
“I keep getting in my own way.”
“I want to feel calmer.”
“I want to trust myself more.”
That is enough to start a conversation. I offer online sessions, and we will talk through the approach before we begin so you know what to expect.
I'm available to talk to you whenever you need it. Let's connect!
