Hypnosis for Weight Loss and Emotional Eating: Changing Your Relationship with Food
You want to lose weight. You know many of the things you could do differently. Yet after a stressful day, the familiar pattern returns: something sweet, another snack, a little comfort.
Then comes the frustration. Why does it feel so difficult to follow through?
If emotional eating is part of your experience, it may be useful to understand what eating gives you in those moments.
Why do we turn to food for comfort?
Food can offer pleasure, relief and a welcome pause. Stress eating, boredom eating and evening snacking can become familiar responses to feelings or situations.
You might reach for chocolate when you feel overwhelmed, use food as a reward after looking after everyone else, or eat automatically while watching television.
These patterns deserve understanding. Physical hunger, emotional needs and daily routines can all play a part.
How can hypnosis support weight loss?
Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and suggestions agreed with you. In weight-management work, sessions can focus on the habits, beliefs and emotional responses that make your goals difficult to follow.
We might work on automatic snacking, your response to stress, food-related self-talk or confidence in caring for yourself.
Imagine finishing a demanding day and noticing what you need before reaching for food. Perhaps you are hungry. Perhaps you need rest, reassurance or a break. Having more room to recognise that need can open up a different choice.
Working on emotional eating can be one part of your journey towards your weight goals and a more comfortable relationship with food.
Changing the patterns around food
When we work together, we look at your experience. When do food cravings appear? What happens before you begin comfort eating? What do you tell yourself afterwards?
We can explore associations such as food meaning reward, relief or reassurance, and develop other ways to respond to those needs.
The aim is to make supportive choices feel more accessible in everyday life. We also work with the guilt and harsh self-criticism that can follow eating, so a difficult day becomes something to learn from.
What does scientific research show?
The 2022 HYPNODIET randomised trial studied 82 adults with obesity and high levels of eating disinhibition, meaning difficulty limiting eating in response to triggers.
Both groups received nutrition education. One group also received eight hypnosis sessions and self-hypnosis training.
At eight months, the hypnosis group showed significantly greater improvement in eating disinhibition. The difference in weight loss between groups was not statistically significant.
The encouraging finding concerns eating behaviour: hypnosis alongside nutritional support helped this selected group respond differently to eating triggers.

Can EFT tapping help with food cravings?
EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, combines tapping with attention to a feeling or situation. I may use it to help you explore the emotional experience connected with a craving or familiar eating pattern.
A 2016 randomised trial involving 83 adults with overweight or obesity compared eight-week EFT and cognitive behavioural therapy programmes. Both showed improvements in food cravings, with comparable results on the measured outcomes. BMI did not decrease.
This offers promising evidence for addressing cravings, although it does not establish that tapping produces weight loss.

How I work with emotional eating
I have a particular interest in helping women understand the connection between food, feelings and learned habits.
My individual sessions draw on coaching, hypnosis, Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) and EFT. We choose suitable approaches together, based on your goals, preferences and circumstances.
Your focus might be stress eating, evening snacking, food cravings, body confidence or following through on changes that matter to you. Together, we develop practical responses you can try between sessions and review what is useful.
